1. Who we are

RKT Engineering Consultants (Pty) Ltd ("RKT", "we", "us") is a mechanical engineering consultancy registered in South Africa, with its principal office at 1 Bognor Road, Rosebank, Cape Town 7700. For privacy enquiries, contact info@rktconsultants.com.

2. What data we collect

We collect only what is necessary to operate our practice and respond to enquiries. Specifically:

• Contact details you provide via our forms, name, email, company, region, phone.
• Project briefs you share when requesting a quote, we treat all briefs as confidential by default.
• Website analytics, aggregate, anonymised usage data via privacy-respecting analytics. No cross-site tracking.
• Region inference, on first visit we infer your country from your IP address to pre-select region and currency. This is stored locally on your device (localStorage), not on our servers.

3. Legal basis for processing (GDPR / EU visitors)

We rely on the following legal bases:

• Consent, when you submit a form or subscribe to the journal.
• Legitimate interests, when we respond to your enquiry or manage a live engagement.
• Contract, when processing is required to deliver a service you have engaged us for.

4. How we use your data

We use the data you provide exclusively to:

• Respond to your enquiry and scope a quote;
• Deliver engagements we have contracted with you or your organisation;
• Send the quarterly journal, if you have subscribed;
• Meet legal, tax, and contractual obligations.

We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with third parties for marketing. We do not use your data for automated decision-making that produces legal effects for you.

5. Your rights

Depending on your region, you have the following rights:

• Access, request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Rectification, correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
• Erasure, request deletion ("right to be forgotten" under GDPR; equivalent rights under CCPA, POPIA).
• Restriction, limit how we process your data.
• Portability, receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
• Objection, object to processing based on legitimate interests.
• Withdraw consent, for any processing based on your consent, at any time.
• California residents (CCPA), right to know, delete, and opt out of sale (we do not sell data).
• South African residents (POPIA), additional rights under Sections 23-25 of POPIA.

6. Data retention

Contact form submissions: retained for 24 months, then deleted. Active engagement records: retained for the duration of the engagement plus 7 years (legal / tax compliance). Newsletter subscriptions: retained until you unsubscribe.

7. International transfers

RKT operates across South Africa, the EU/UK, the Middle East, and serves clients globally. When your data is transferred outside your home jurisdiction, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (for EU/UK transfers) or equivalent adequacy mechanisms. Data is stored on encrypted infrastructure with providers that meet international security standards.

We use minimal, strictly necessary cookies and localStorage, primarily for region selection and form state. See our Cookie Policy for details.

9. Security

We apply industry-standard technical and organisational measures to protect your data: TLS encryption in transit, encrypted storage at rest, access control on all systems, and regular security reviews. No system is completely secure; if we become aware of a breach affecting your data, we will notify you and the relevant regulator within the timeframes required by applicable law (72 hours under GDPR and POPIA).

10. Complaints

If you believe your privacy rights have been violated, you may lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority, in the EU with your national DPA, in the UK with the ICO, in South Africa with the Information Regulator, in California with the Attorney General's office.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in law or our practices. Material changes will be notified to subscribers by email. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
